Lesson 1: Introductions and Course Survey

Learning objectives:

  • We will learn who is in the room
  • We will share our needs and goals
  • We will create shared expectations
  • We will learn about the IB Diploma Programme
  • We will become familiar with Theory of Knowledge as related to IB
  • We will survey the course design
 

Lesson 2: Holistic Approach to Learning

Learning objectives:

  • We will reflect on their cognitive learning styles
  • We will take a Big 5 (OCEAN) personality inventory
  • We will interpret their results
  • We will explore continuity or discontinuity between our experience and psychological literature
  • We will devise appropriate study routines based on our personality
  • We will practice breathing techniques
  • We will practice stretching and calisthenics to develop an awareness of their bodies
  • We will explore the relation of nutrition, exercise, and sleep to academic performance
  • We will explore the relationship of socioemotional health to academic performance
  • We will devise appropriate self-care routines based on our biological and socioemotional needs
 

Lesson 3: Goal Setting and Time Management

Learning objectives:

  • We will explore the relationship between goal-directed behavior and affect
  • We will consider the nesting of their immediate and long-term goals
  • We will learn to set SMART goals
  • We will subdivide and sequence large tasks
  • We will survey time management techniques:
    • Schedules
    • Checklists
    • Bullet Journal
    • Etc.
  • We will examine challenges to self-control and the importance of limiting distractions
  • We will think about ways to reflect and self-assess
 

Lesson 4: Annotation, Note-Taking, and Critical Reading

Learning objectives:

  • We will practice speed reading techniques
  • We will practice annotation
  • We will survey five note-taking methods
  • We will practice critical reading techniques
  • We will study source bias
 

Lesson 5: Research – Empirical Research Methods

Learning objectives:

  • We will study the history of empirical research
  • We will survey the modern scientific method
  • We will design and conduct our own experiments
  • We will consider the limitations of empirical science and the importance of critical interpretation of scientific findings
 

Lesson 6: Brainstorming, Mind Mapping, and Research Questions

Learning objectives:

  • We will practice brainstorming techniques
  • We will consider the role of collaboration in the idea generation process
  • We will practice mind mapping
  • We will generate research questions to guide our research process
 

Lesson 7: Research – Finding, Reviewing, and Referencing Sources

Learning objectives:

  • We will consider the importance of citation and the dangers of plagiarism
  • We will practice finding print and electronic sources
  • We will practice referencing sources
  • We will apply speed reading and note taking skills to assemble resource lists
  • We will perform a literature review
 

Lesson 8: Essay Writing – Theory and Outlining

Learning objectives:

  • We will use a research question to guide essay writing
  • We will consider Jordan Peterson’s theory of essay writing
  • We will survey levels of resolution: context, essay, section, paragraph, sentence, word
  • We will outline an essay
  • We will study effective transitions
  • We will practice essay writing with teacher feedback
 

Lesson 9: Essay Writing – Editing, Formatting, and Proofreading

Learning objectives:

  • We will practice editing at different levels of resolution
  • We will practice common formatting conventions
  • We will practice proofreading essays
 

Lesson 10: Presentation Skills – Psychology

Learning objectives:

  • We will consider audience expectations
  • We will study the physiological and psychological capabilities of audiences
  • We will structure a presentation to respond to audience wants and needs
 

Lesson 11: Presentation Skills – Mechanics

  • We will practice breathing and articulation exercises
  • We will practice projection and speaking drills
  • We will practice deliberate movement including gestures
  • We will practice creating and using effective visual aids
 

Lesson 12: Examinations and Study Techniques

  • We will survey study techniques and best practices
  • We will survey test-taking techniques and best practices
  • We will prepare our presentations
 

Lesson 13: Knowing by Teaching

  • We will demonstrate our learning in the course by presenting to the class
  • We will self-evaluate our work and reflect on ways to iterate and improve
 

Lesson 14: Review and Discussion

  • We will review the course
  • We will ask clarifying questions
  • We will evaluate the course
