It's been a while since I last posted here. In December, I traveled to Greece for the World Universities Debating Championship where I won a few rounds, lost a few rounds, and learned a lot about the person and debater I want to be. After that tournament, my partner Daniel Hugo retired from debate to focus on his final semester of law school.
Since then, my new partner Giraldine Duff and I have been preparing to travel to the Pan American Debating Championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica this March. After that, we will compete at the United States Universities Debating Championship in Atlanta, Georgia this April.
At this weekend's Pan Pacific Championship, we ranked best team after preliminary rounds. Giraldine ranked third top speaker and I took top speaker. In the process, we beat teams from Hawaii Pacific University, Clemson University, Evangel University, Loyola Marymount University and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
In the final round, we argued in favor of the motion: "This house is a community that knows it will undergo consistent tragedy (war, violence, hunger etc.) over the next 10 years. Assuming there was a potion that could keep you from ever feeling pain, this house would take the potion." We ranked second of the four teams in the final after a 3-2 split decision by the panel judges.
In the next month, we'll be practicing together twice weekly to hone our skills and refine our strategies in advance of our upcoming national and international competitions. With luck, we'll be able to post results which will bring honor to our state!
