Last Saturday, I coached a team from 'Iolani School at the 7th Annual Youth Speaks Hawai'i Interscholastic Teen Team Poetry Slam. I've been working with this team for 10 weeks, and I was extremely proud of their performance. They exemplified the spirit of the competition, showing support for all the other teams.
Last night, I arrived home from my family's Thanksgiving dinner to upload photos from the event. As I browsed through the photos to select the best, I was reminded of the importance and power of the work I do. For many of my students, spoken word provides a necessary outlet for emotion. I'm lucky to assist them in this creative pursuit.
Today, I'm grateful for my mother's support. Without her, I would not be able to pursue all the opportunities presented to me. In addition, I've been surrounded by patient, supportive friends and family. My teachers have challenged me and refused to let me simmer in complacency. My mentors have forced me to consider and reconsider my motivations and actions. I'm thankful for all the opportunities I've enjoyed, and I promise to work harder for the communities I belong to.
